Earth Element: The Functions of the Spleen and Stomach in Chinese Medicine

Harvest time is an Earthy time of year. This is the time of year when, within the Chinese medicine 5 element philosophy, the Earth organs of the Spleen and Stomach are active. The Earth element comes alive as we prepare for gathering nurturing, assimilate the fruits of summer and transition into fall.

The Earth element in Chinese medicine is associated with the season of late summer, the time when summer fades away and the turning inward of fall has yet to fully happen.

Earth is also associated with the time between all seasons, between all climactic and celestial transitions (the equinoxes and solstices).

These two manifestations of Earth blend right now because the autumn equinox is approaching, and it is late summer (in the Northern hemisphere, admitedly).

In this post I am introducing the Earth element and how it relates to the Earth organs of the Spleen and the Stomach. This is beginning a month of Chinese medicine-related posts to the blog.

This will be a simple overview of the potentially complex subject of Chinese medicine theory.

I wish I knew the simplest way to talk about Chinese medicine. But I am not that savvy – yet. So please bear with me and use your imagination. I hope that this paints a picture of the grounding and nurturing capacities of the Earth element in the body.

This post is a part of a series about the Earth element in Chinese medicine.

Part 1: This post on the Earth element and the functions (and pathologies) of the Earth organs, the Spleen and Stomach

Part 2: Nourishing the Earth Element through Food for the Spleen and Stomach

Part 3: Spleen 6 Acupressure point for supporting the digestion, the womb, bleeding and the lower abdomen, and grounding for anxiety (coming out next Sunday).

An Earthy time of year for our bodies, too

As I have talked about before, I love love love seasonality and I love reflection.

Just as I do with climatic seasons, earth-based ritual seasons, Moon cycles, menstrual cycles and astrology seasons, I revel feeling into how we the 5 Chinese elements as parts of repeating seasons.

I haven’t talked about Chinese medicine on the blog yet, but it’s a big part of what I do. The inspiration for this entry is the desire to make a bridge between acupuncture and herbs and the theory behind it.

I’ve been sharing a few acupressure points with some of my patients and clients (people I see in person for acupuncture I call patients, people I talk with at a distance I call clients because I am more of a consultant and less of a practitioner).

Stomach 44Nei Ting/Inner Court, for indigestion with headache.

Spleen 6 San Yin Jiao/Three Yin Meeting and Stomach 36 Zu San Li/Leg Three Mile for poor appetite and low energy.

Pericardium 6 Nei Guan/Inner Pass, for morning sickness and nausea (The Pericardium organ is related to the Fire element, not the Earth element, but it strongly works on the Middle Burner or digestive center).

As I explain what these points mean and their functions, I talk about the Earth element.

After a few weeks of suggesting the same Earth supporting points over and over, I realized, oh, this is the Earth time of year, no wonder!

As above so below

That’s because what is happening celestially is happening internally.

It’s crazy how often this happens. For example, my family and I are all going through odd things with our appetite and eating habits. A week ago we all had a little tiny stomach bug from something we ate and we’ve been off ever since.

It’s belly teas for us all, everyday, over here (with – guess what – Chamomile and Catnip, Angelica and Fennel). For my acu patients it’s shiatsu and the standby Earth supporting points.

We need to bolster the Earth element and the Spleen and Stomach so we have a solid foundation to enter the transition of Fall and the harshness of winter.

Vitality is cultivated all year round, but the Earth element is essential because it is the entire foundation of the Qi we have for this life.

When we are born, we inherit Pre-Natal Qi from our parents. Then, as we live our life, the only other place we get Qi from is directly from the Spleen and Stomach – directly from our food. (There’s more to Qi – we also lean on some Qi from the Lungs and Heart called Zong Qi/Gathering Qi/Ancestral Qi. That’s for another post 🙂

Yes, we really are what we eat, digest, assimilate, absorb and fail to eliminate.

It is a privilege to practice Chinese medicine as a White Westerner

When I begin to engage with Chinese medicine, I model what I was taught before doing Reiki. I take a moment to give gratitude for the Chinese medicine masters and teachers who cultivated and brought this medicine out into their own culture and later, into the world.

I acknowledge the many other East Asian people who have developed this medicine, and I acknowledge that this medicine is from them. It is truly a privilege to have access to this medicine without having to learn the Chinese language.

It is also essential that I as a White western person actively check and work on my own inherent bias, and actively stand up against racism against Asian Americans.

Earth Element season: Centered, Grounded and Connected

This time of year is ripe to contemplate what it means to be centered, grounded and connected.

The carefree days of summer are over. School starts. The harvest time has begun.

The dying back of plant life and retreat of the animals are around the corner. The end of the year (a time of completion) and the holidays (a time of sharing material and spiritual wealth) are approaching. We think about this past year and how our garden will reap (or not) what we sowed in the past.

The Earth element is a pivot.

It’s a standstill, the eye of a hurricane.

In the seasons, it’s where the expansiveness of summer turns and pauses before it retreats inward for fall.

It’s the middle road path in ourselves and our lives, not quite holding back and not quite full expression. It’s unity, harmony, agreement, symmetry.

At this time of year, following a path of moderation and regularity is indicated. In fact, it is helpful to cultivate harmony in all areas of your life regardless of season. This is especially true when you want to work on strengthening the Earth element and the Spleen and Stomach.

Earth Correspondences

These are from the book Between Heaven and Earth: A Guide to Chinese Medicine. This book is great if you are interested in learning about the 5 Elements and how they apply to Chinese Medicine. I also recommend Staying Healthy with the Seasons and Wood Becomes Water.

Between Heaven and Earth has a quiz to help discover your Element type. However, I take these quizzes with a grain of salt. I think a practitioner assessing your whole health history and doing diagnostic observations like taking pulse, looking at the tongue, face and body type and doing abdominal diagnosis can make more accurate guess with our true type.

If we even have a type or can be typed is up to debate by me; we are all composed of all the elements, and some come out in different circumstances. Similar to astrology – we are a part of a whole system and are intricate beings. We all have 12 houses and 12 signs in our charts.

That being said, it is a fun exercise to observe the Elements manifesting within ourselves and during their time of year.

Years ago, I watched Hoarders with some friends and started to watch it from a 5 Element perspective. This was especially easy to do because the topic is so emotional. Some people were Water types, others Metal, and so on. I do not mean to say that I was making fun of the people on that show – no judgement 🙂

The Earth Organs: Spleen and Stomach

The Spleen and the Stomach are capitalized because they represent organ systems, functions and relationships within the body. They are not the actual organs as we know within Western medicine of the spleen and stomach (although there is much overlap).

As one could guess, the Spleen and Stomach have a lot to do with digestion. The Spleen and Stomach accept nourishment, break it down and distribute building blocks derived from our diet to the rest of the body.

Here’s a summary of each of their actions:

The Spleen: Transformation and Transportation of Qi and Blood

This is an overview of the functions of the Spleen and Stomach, straight out of my TCM Theory notes:

  • Governs transformation and transportation
  • Controls ascending of Qi
  • Controls the Blood
  • ASSOCIATED TISSUE Controls the muscles and 4 limbs
  • ASSOCIATED FLUIDS controls the saliva
  • ASSOCIATED ORIFICE Opens to the mouth and
  • MANIFESTS in the lips
  • ASSOCIATED SPIRIT Houses the Intellect Yi
  • Affected by pensiveness

The Pathologies of the Spleen are:

  • Spleen Qi Deficiency
  • Spleen Yang Deficiency
  • Sinking Spleen Qi
  • Spleen Dampness (not really a pathology, but a state that often occurs in the Spleen)
  • Deficient Spleen not contributing to Blood
  • Cold-Damp in the Spleen
  • Damp-Heat in the Spleen

Below I describe the functions of the Spleen along with the associated Pathologies.

I am still working on how to share this info without being like a text book. For me, this type of theory is best delivered in a class setting, with a board to draw on. Maybe a video?

The Spleen Governs digestion and absorption.

The Spleen transforms and transports what we eat and drink. In order to use food as the building block for life, it has to be moved to the right organs at the right time in order to be digested.

We have good appetite and digestion, and easy and regular elimination, and energy when this system is working well.

Governs Fluid Metabolism

Just as the soil holds water, the Earth organs do the same in the body.

It’s common for Chinese medicine practitioners to say that there is “Spleen dampness” or just plain “dampness” in the body.

Dampness can occur when the normal movement of water in the body is off. This often stems from impaired digestive functions due to lack of vitality, which we call Spleen Qi Xu/Deficiency (Xu means deficiency and sounds like shoe).

Or Dampness can occur because it is coming from the outside in, like living in a damp environment, or eating cold and mucus forming foods. This is called Cold Damp Invading the Spleen. Edema, puffiness, watery or loose stool, phlegm, nodules, or being bothered by damp weather are a few signs of dampness.

Often this warming, lifting and energizing capacity of the Spleen is impaired due to Spleen Yang Xu/Deficiency.

The Spleen has an Ascending Quality and Controls the Blood

Because of it’s Earth element association, the Spleen holds and contains parts of the body.

Thus the Spleen holds the organs, structures and materials of the body in their rightful places. Bleeding, flaccidity, leakage and prolapse may result from a deficient Spleen causing Spleen Qi Sinking. As Gail Reichstein’s says in Wood Becomes Water,

“Dysfunctions in this aspect of the Spleen can lead to phlegm, diarrhea, or asthma, or to organ prolapses, varicose veins and hemorrhoids.”

The pattern of the Spleen Unable to Control the Blood may be a reason for excess bleeding like hemorrhage, blood in the stool or urine, excess menstrual flow.

The Spleen’s relationship to blood is more than just holding it in place; it also helps to form the blood because of its ability to digest food into the base building blocks which form blood itself. When treating anemia, nutrient deficiencies, or working with the Chinese medicine concept of tonifying blood, the Spleen is often treated.

I have seen how treating the Spleen (along with other organs and meridians) can help the restore the pelvic floor to it’s rightful function holding, lifting and yet buoyant and weight-bearing during postpartum. The pelvic floor is like a pivot itself!

The Spleen is Associated with the Flesh of the Limbs

Jeffrey Yuen teaches in his lecture about Immunity and Chinese Medicine that typically TMC theory says the Spleen is associated with the muscles, but actually the Spleen is assocated with everything encompases in the flesh of the 4 limbs: muscles, tendons, fascia, lymphatic fluids and vessels, the blood vessels, and the connective tissue.

The Spleen is responsible for nourishing the limbs. As one of our instructors would say, “the muscles of the body need TLC, in the form of ample Qi and Blood”.

Basically, if the problem involves a muscle and especially the limbs, treat the Earth element, too. This is especially the case with general fatigue or chronically achy muscles and heavy limbs.

The Spleen is Associated with Saliva, the Lips and the Mouth

The mouth is the start of the digestive system, so it’s no wonder that the Spleen manifests here.

Pale, dry, cracked, or overly red lips are a signal that the Spleen needs some support.

A dry or sticky mouth, food not tasting right or appealing while chewing or lack of appetite are also signs of imbalance.

The Spleen has many functions which overlap with the pancreas from a Western perspective, which produces digestive enzymes.

Some of these enzymes are present in saliva and start the digestive process of carbohydrates right in the mouth. That’s why starchy foods like crackers can dissolve right in your mouth – all those enzymes!

Digestion on all levels

Our bodies can only digest so much – physically and mentally.

Each organ has a related area of the human psyche, and for the Spleen it is our mental capacity.

On one end of the spectrum, feeling spacey, the inability to concentrate or ungroundedness can be a sign on Spleen imbalance; while on the other end, one tends to over-thinking, worry and obsessive.

Students or anybody who does more mental work and memorization then their body can tolerate (especially under pressure) can often feel the Spleen being taxed.

Poor digestion, bloating, feeling tired after eating, loose stool, lack of appetite can occur when being overworked mentally.

Spiritually, the Spleen houses the Yi, the intellect

Within in Chinese culture, philosophy, religion and traditional or folk spiritual beliefs (these things are connected), the organs contain certain parts of the spirit. The Heart contains the Shen, the spirit, the Liver contains the Hun, the ethereal soul, and the Lungs contain the Po, the corporeal soul. You can learn more about this from Hun & Po in Daoism and The 5 Shen in Medicine). The Kidney contains the Zhi or will, and the Spleen contains the Yi or intellect.

The Yi/Intellect is that it is the energy to learn and share “by heart”. In the West we think of learning as being from the brain. Yet it’s not hard to shift the scope of the brain to encompass the enteric brain, and the brain-gut connection.

The Yi governs the transmission of knowledge, thoughts, learning, verbalizing ideas or opinions, and memorizing.

If you are in a place of over-acquiring information, having to learn a lot of information, having to preform and speak of what you know, or simply being exposed to a lot of information bits on a regular basis, if your Spleen isn’t exceptionally strong, an imbalance and over-burden of the Spleen is likely to occur.

We can digest and assimilate a bite of information at a time.

To gain knowledge and wisdom, we need lots of white space and time to be with the new reality those ideas hold. This is precisely why I am off instagram – I need more mental white space (link goes to a little blog post from Cal Newport, who I’ve been reading a lot of lately). We need time to integrate them into our being.

Feelings related to an out of balance Yi are worry, obsession, lack of concentration, over working, under working or erratic working, overly sympathetic and empathetic.

When I reach a point of diminishing mental returns and overload, I know I need to take an intellectual intake break. Through resting, I nurture the Spleen.

How do I do that? Connect to the Earth!

Earthing (placing my feet on the ground) and gardening are probably the most direct and easy way. Gazing out the window is a good way for the homebound. More Earth balancing suggestions are below.

The Stomach, The Yang Earth Organ

In Chinese medicine theory, the Stomach and the Spleen are paired.

In fact, they are the most interrelated of the Yin and Yang organ pairs (others being Liver and Gallbladder, Heart and Small Intestine, Pericardium and Triple Burner, Lung and Large Intestine, and Kidney and Bladder). The Spleen and Stomach are more alike than the other organ pairs. They are aspects of one organ system, rather than two semi-related organs which are paired together, like the other pairs.

The Yang organs are less important the the Yin ones. Perhaps they aren’t less important but simply more straightforward in their actions and functions. They also have less pathology associated with them.

Functions of the Stomach

  • Receives and ripens aka rots food and drink: “Receives” implies that the Stomach holds the food.
  • Controls rotting and ripening: Through chewing and then the fermentation process.
  • Controls transportation of food essence: Especially to the limbs along with the Spleen.
  • Controls descending of Qi: Sends partially digested food to the intestines.
  • Origin of fluids: The Stomach Yin fluids contribute to Kidney Yin, which is the basis of the Yin of the entire body.

Pathologies of the Stomach

  • Stomach Heat and Stomach Fire, two pathologies of a lack of Stomach Yin imbalanced with excess Stomach Yang (may result in ulcers, infections, reflux, mouth problems, ect…)
  • Stomach Yin Deficiency: Like Stomach Heat but with more dryness due to lack of moistening fluids
  • Stomach Cold: Digestive process slowed and lacking vitality.

The Importance of Digestion

The Earth organs are pivotal to our health and vitality.

We derive Qi and make Blood from what we eat. Qi and Blood depend on a vibrant Spleen and Stomach to extract as the basic building blocks of food.

But it’s more complicated than just food in equals our available vitality. So many other organs systems, genetic, microbiomic, emotional and environmental factors influence how well that digestive (and assimilation, absorption and elimination) process happens.

Add in the all the factors which surround food politics in our modern world, and it’s no surprise the Earth organs often doesn’t have the nourishment they could have, and we can feel the effects.

Our digestion deserves our full attention

Symptoms that we consider par for the course as a side effect of modern life are taken seriously in other cultures around the world. We see this in Chinese medicine as well.

Nausea, bloating, acid reflux, loose stools or constipation, pooping inconsistencies or weird stool formations (like mucus in the stool or sticky poo), poor appetite, wanting to lay down after eating, gum problems, dysbiosis and chronic infection, headache after eating, and weight gain or loss are signs that the Spleen and Stomachs functionality have been compromised.

I agree that these symptoms should be treated. I give some sort of formula for these digestive complaints to just about all the patients I treat with herbs.

We don’t have to grin and bear digestive issues, even if they seem commonplace. They may be supported with any combination of things that resonate with you and thing you have access to. Some examples are diet, herbs, acupuncture and bodywork, relaxation, stress reduction or somatic modalities, lifestyle changes, Qi Gong or movement or Feng Shui.

As a society, we can take care of one another, celebrate another by cooking nourishingly for them. And overall, we can take care of our mental health and healing individually and collectively. Trauma of various sorts can lead to anxiety, and anxiety has an insidious way to affect the enteric brain.

A healthy Earth element leads to the cultivation of Qi and Blood

Remember that the Earth organs extract the vital nutrients to provide energy for the entire body?

Symptoms of Spleen deficiency can include signs other than obvious digestive complaints. Some examples are chronic tiredness, feeling tired after eating, weakness, pale complexion and feeling down, depressed or in a creative funk.

As a practitioner, I utilize palpation and tongue and pulse diagnosis to help verify signs of symptoms which may be due to a Spleen imbalance.

However, regardless of your depth of understanding of Chinese medicine specifics, we all can reflect on the Earth element.

Simple practices to nurture the Earth Element

There are many ways to cultivate a healthy, vibrant Earth element and to nurture the Spleen and Stomach. In this post I am going to give the easiest ways that anyone can do.

  • Grounding meditations: Relaxing while taking some deep breaths and imagining that you are growing roots into the Earth.
  • Connect to the Earth: Anything to do with touching the ground, working with soil, plants and simply being outside.
  • Make the most out of every eating experience: Sitting for meals at regular times, slowing down, chewing well, using your senses to experience the food, and giving thanks.
  • Balance your home and your stuff: Clutter really does overload the Earth element.
  • Create mental white space: Overthinking, worrying and consuming a lot of media can overwhelm the Spleen.
  • I can’t NOT talk about teas but I’ll keep it simple: Chamomile and/or Licorice tea are easy enough for anyone to find boxed at a grocery store . Both are very nice for the Spleen and Stomach, and Chamomile is wonderful at reducing anxiety, too.
  • Being regular and moderate is the way of the Earth element. Listen to one podcast, then take a long break before listening to another. We joke about binge watching shows, but when it comes to cultivating vitality through the Spleen, regular rhythm is therapeutic. We can’t truly digest what we take in unless we give it some space and time. Daily life digestives like exercise or connecting with the Earth outside can help.

Spleen and Stomach and the Earth Element in Closing

I have a hard time talking about the difference between the Earth element and the Spleen and Stomach.

Generally though, the Earth organs are the physical, anatomical, functional representation of the Earth Element energy. The Spleen and Stomach are the gateway into cultivation of a nourished Earth element within our bodies.

The Earth Element energy within the Chinese 5 Element system can be applied to many things, like we saw above. In following posts, I will go into the mental-emotional-spiritual aspects of the Earth Element.

In the next post, I’ll talk about some general theory about foods to support the Spleen and Stomach and our Earth element.

Take good care of your center, each other and the Earth.

In good health,

Celia
